5 Reasons Why Applications For Schengen Visas Get Rejected

Submitted by: Jessie G.

From our experience we know that there are a few factors which confuse applicants and their visa applications get rejected by a consulate. Let us explain what these factors are.

Misinterpretation of a Schengen visa. There is no Schengen visa which is issued purely on the basis that the applicant wants to travel across the Schengen countries, you must choose your main destination and apply for your visa at the consulate/application centre of that country. It is essential to know this. The Schengen agreement is signed by 25 European countries; a Schengen visa is a visa granted by any of these member countries.

E.g., if you have a visa issued by the Italian consulate, it is an Italian Schengen visa. If you obtained your visa at the Swiss consulate, you hold a Swiss Schengen visa. There is a regulation to observe when submitting your visa application: it MUST be lodged at a consulate of the country you chose to be your main destination. Applicants who do not define their main destination correctly will inevitably be rejected.

Misunderstanding the visa validity and its duration. People believe that they can request a 1 or 2 year Schengen visa and stay in the Schengen area for a whole year or two but this doesn’t work like that. It is possible to obtain a visa for 1 or 2 years but its issuance depend on a few things. For example, if you are not married to an EU/EEA citizen and you apply for a Spanish visa for the first time, it is almost certain that your visa will be granted for one trip only. The duration of stay permitted is shown on the visa; normally, a multiple entry visa gives you a right to enter and stay in the Schengen area for up to 90 days per 6 months. Please note that if you need to stay in a Schengen country for longer, you should apply for a long term visa instead of Tourist, Business and Transit visas.

Insufficient time for visa processing. Please do not count on getting a Schengen visa on the same day when you submit your application. At present, it takes consulates at least 3 business days to issue a visa. Applicant’s citizenship is an important aspect here. Passport holders of developing countries will have to wait for their visa for 3-4 weeks

from the submission day.

Lodging the application at a wrong office. When you have decided what your main destination will be, you have to schedule an appointment at the consulate/application centre of that country. When you have decided what your main destination will be, you have to schedule an appointment at the consulate/application centre of that country. For instance, if you live in Scotland and wish to obtain a French Schengen visa, you application will not be accepted in London, you must apply in Edinburg. To find where you

should be submitting your application please visit the official web site of you main destination country.

Providing wrong application form. Please be careful with visa application forms. If you get a form from the internet, make sure you take it from the official embassy’s web site – in this case you will know that the form is up-to-date.
